Egg Retrieval

Tomorrow morning I go into the clinic for egg retrieval!

For those that don't know, this is when the doctor goes into my ovaries with a small needle and sucks out all of the eggs. I am put out for the procedure (thank goodness, it sounds ouchy) and takes about 20 minutes. The eggs are then combined with the sperm to be fertilized.

I have very little recollection of getting this done last August. I remember arriving at the clinic, talking to the doctor briefly after the procedure, and nothing else. In the car on the way home I suddenly realized that I didn't remember the last hour or so. I asked Adrian, "how did I get dressed?" Apparently I also sent some texts to my friend Laney, of which I have no memory. In fact, I can't remember much about that day at all.

Anyway, back to the explanation. In order for the eggs to come easily, the follicles must release the eggs. To time this right, I took an hCG shot last night, which triggers ovulation exactly 36 hours after giving it.

Doesn't this make getting pregnant seem so medical and contrived? I have learned from past experience that it is actually very spiritual, despite the fact that so many more people are involved in the process.

Today I have had a day off of shots and it's been wonderful. I have felt completely normal and happy.

Adrian said a dinner prayer the other day, in which he asked the Lord to help us have another baby. Taylor responded at the end of the prayer with "Amen. Amen."
I told Taylor that he must have really agreed with Adrian's prayer, to which he responded, "I did. Especially the part about having another baby."

I haven't known exactly how much to share with him about IVF, but he's looking forward to the day he does have a brother or sister (or both, as he would like). And no matter what happens this time around, I sincerely believe that day will come. Until then, I think we still have a pretty great family. Don't you?
