School and Politics

Taylor started pre-k last week. He had been on the waiting list since May and luckily got in the day before it started.

Let me tell you why people here want to get into pre-k:

1. It is free
2. They pick him up and drop him off at our house
3. They feed him lunch every day, free

While these things are great, why are they being offered when there are so many budget cuts? Last year there was no waiting list for pre-k because they offered plenty of classes. This year they cut several of the classes and a lot of kids didn't get in.

Taylor is at school from 12:45 to 3:15. Does he really need to eat lunch there? And is bussing necessary?

We pay very high taxes in Amherst. I would rather have my taxes going toward more kids going to school than toward my kid getting bussed and eating free lunch.

But for now, I am happy he got in, Adrian is happy they bus him, and he is happy he is getting lunch.

Taylor must feel like such a big kid going on the bus. I can't believe he's old enough for pre-k. Sounds like a nice set up you have there. Enjoy it, even if you don't agree with how your tax money is being spent.

We have pre k too. It is also free, and there were also a limited number of seats. Jason didn't make the lottery drawing, but got a spot after people dropped out. In our district pre k doesnt get bussing or lunch. Parents pack a "healthy" snack each day for them. I have to say that I love his school way more than I thought I would!! What's lame in our district is that my kids can take the bus from K-2 and we live accross the street.

Natalie- Just read some of your thought provoking blog posts. I love that you are thinking deeper (and sharing your thoughts) about things that we all experience. Hope all is well!
