Day 2: The Power of Corn

We had 10 hours of driving scheduled for today, so I got up early for a quick round of golf. It was cold, rainy and uneventful except for a couple of birdies. I also overheard my nephew Jacob reporting the day's events to his mother over the phone. He made it sound far more interesting than I even could- so I will be transcribing, but today's post will be 10-year-old Jacob's words:

Breakfast was a great deal. I got 2 strips of bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs, 2 pieces of toast and orange juice all for $3.95. Cameron and Adrian had strawberry waffles that looked pretty good.

After that we started driving. Adrian and Cameron were listening to a book on tape called "A Short History of Nearly Everything." I didn't really like it. All that happened was a scientist invented something, then he got a noble prize, then he had an unhappy death. Then the same thing happened.

Adrian said that we would get lunch in Lincoln, I wasn't THAT hungry, but I still wanted lunch in a big city. We get to Lincoln, and I was thinking "wow, this is a big city... we have plenty of restaurant options." But unfortunately, Adrian was really "feeling it" on his driving, so we drove through the huge city of Lincoln and didn't get lunch at all.
Finally, halfway to Omaha from Lincoln we stopped at a McDonalds because it was like the only option we had. We drove over the Missouri river right before we got to Omaha. There was a lot of swampy grass all over. It was kind of ugly. We also passed a baseball stadium in Omaha where they played the College World Series. Adrian was on the phone so he didn't see it.

We ended up staying in Iowa City, one of the places Adrian lived when he was just a kid. Right now we are writing this blog, waiting for the pizza to come and then we will be taking a swim. The pizza guy is running late. I am excited we are going to the White Sox Game in Chicago tomorrow, but there are thunderstorms scheduled for tomorrow so I hope the game isn't rained out. If it is rained out, we will go to the Art Institute of Chicago.
