Almost to the summit

As I write this blog, I realize that our hike looks easy and somewhat effortless. I promise, there were some long days with a lot of steep hiking.

In order to prepare for the summit, we had to acclimatize to the elevation. We did this by hiking to our campsite, then hiking for another few kilometers, and then returning for the night. This allowed our bodies to get used to a higher elevation. The next two pictures were taken on one of these hikes.

Adrian, Joshua (guide), and dad

Yes, there were areas where Adrian could get internet on the mountain.

Remains of a plane crash that happened 2009.

One of the highlights of the trip was teaching the crew how to play the animal sign game. I felt like there was such a big divide between us and the crew, and I really wanted to figure out a way to put us on the same level. Playing games was the perfect way to achieve this. We had a lot of down time after arriving to camp each day, so it was also fun to have something to do. We did a lot of laughing and a lot of bonding. We taught them a few other games as well. We had a language barrier, so these games were perfect.

All of the porters.

That's so weird that you had to back track. Couldn't you just acclimatize to the elevation over night while you were sleeping?

They say you can only acclimatize about 1,000 meters per day, so they take it slow but the back tracking is more so that you can visits another mountain in the area. The saying is "climb high, sleep low" which I guess allows for better acclimatization.
