Wedesday my family set sail on our first cruise ever. It was my Mom's dream to do a cruise throught he Panama Canal, and even though she has been very sick as a result of chemo and stage 4 cancer, we decided to go on the cruise anyway. It wasn't easy getting Mom to the cruise and required wheelchairs and at least one affective use of the boy scout two-man chair, but eventually we made it on the cruise this past Wednesday.
At firm Mom wasn't doing too hot, but that has been the case for the last couple weeks. She was able to join us for lunch and dinner and eat a little bit both days. The next day things started to go downhill. Mom couldn't keep much food down and had a long night of vomiting, etc. The next day, Day 3 of the cruise, my Dad decided to ask the ship doctor to put her on an IV to get some fluids in her, because Mom was getting very dehydrated. He also took her blood, and that is when it was discovered that her white blood count was below 500. To put that in perspective, it was around 8,000 before that. To have such a low white blood count basically means that she had no immune system and required her to get to a hospital as soon as possible. Mom, Dad, Cameron and Damian all got off the boat and headed to the local American clinic.
Just as this was happening, Natalie, Taylor, Myself, Brandon, Annie and Lucy were just returning to the boat just in time to learn the news, but too late to get off before the cruise ship left from Cabo.
The next day Mom was able to fly direct to Salt Lake from Cabo with Dad and brothers and now she is stable and staying at the Hunstman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City.
The rest of us are literally about to board a flight in Acapulco, Mexico to join the rest in Salt Lake City. Gotta run to board the flight. More later.
