Mom, Cancer, and Living

Last week my Mom called with news that cancer had returned in her lungs.

Later I found out that it was also in her liver, on her spine, and in her brain. Some of my brothers have grieved over the news, my brother Damian wrote an incredible blog post about it here: http://gladhanded.blogspot.com/ - but I'm not sure exactly how to process it.

I am savoring every moment left on this earth with my Mom. Natalie made dinner for all of us on Sunday, and we brought it over to my Mom's. She was feeling a little bit better, so we ate together on the back porch and chatted in the afternoon sun. We had teriyaki chicken kabobs with fresh pineapple, coconut milk rice, and mango-avocado salsa. First the first time in a week, my Mom ate her food and had seconds. How can I be sad when I am with my Mom eating mango-avocado salsa?

Natalie and I feel so blessed to be here with my parents, and we are enjoying every moment. It kind of seems like a contradiction, but after relying on my Mom for so many years- it is great to be able to be here for her. Thanks to everybody for your thoughts and prayers, I'm sure they will be needed in times to come- but right now we are just trying to enjoy the time we have together.

As someone who lost their own mother to lung cancer, Adrian, I get it. The one main thing you can do is get all of the questions you ever wanted answers to, resolve all of the issues you have ever wanted to resolve and give all of the love you have ever wanted to give to her.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I hope only for the best.

Adrian,
Our prayer our with you and your family. Your mom and dad have meant so much to Jordan and I. Honestly, I don't know where I would be without them. They were a pillar of strenght when I needed them and when my family needed them when we lost Scott. Having lost him to cancer, I know how precious each moment is. I also know that families are forever. I hope that comes as some kind of comfort to you and your family.
